When deployed using the UNM-standard device management solutions (SCCM and/or Jamf), activation occurs automatically. UNM IT (Information Technologies) maintains a KMS server that all UNM departments can utilize for activations. Legacy versions of Microsoft Office (2013-2019) and Windows desktop (8.1 early releases of Windows 10), and ALL versions of Windows Server (2016, 2019, etc.) still use the Key Management Service (KMS) for activation. Users can install and activate Microsoft 365 Apps on up to 5 desktops/laptops, 5 tablets, and 5 mobile devices, using their UNM account To activate a modern version of Microsoft Office, download and install it, then login with your UNM username and password when prompted.
In other words, activation is attached to your UNM NetID. Modern versions of Windows and Office (Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise, formerly known as 'Pro Plus,' and Office 2021) are activated with subscription user-based licensing.
